THE GRAIL, Acrylic on canvas, 48"X60"
The Grail is a large-scale acrylic on canvas painted in the context of an intense life changing personal struggle making the creative process as important as the piece as it served as an essential cathartic art therapy process to work through and overcome adversity. Batcules has a strong belief in the idea that creativity in all its forms is an essential critical action in the process of living life and documenting life experiences. Artistic characteristics are in all of us – it is a matter of having faith in the ability and bravery to express and the understanding there are no mistakes – only opportunities to see with a fresh perspective. During Batcules’ time in college and university she studied and admired the magnificent power of Leonardo DaVinci and the Renaissance and always embraced the idea that history is the backbone of humanity holding valuable information to enable our confident movement into the future and the value of embracing gratitude for great lessons of the past build strength when we face struggle. The painting is therefore an interpretation and homage to Leonardo DaVinci – specifically two works combining Christ and Mary, the masculine and feminine into one picture anchored by their eyes cast down in contemplation of the central theme of the Tree of Life. The DaVinci portrait of Christ is combined with the Mary image taken from DaVinci's Madonna of the Rocks.
